Reconditioning rusted transformers

because I live in a humid environment, some transformers develop light to medium rust along the exposed lamination edges and in spots on the endbells. I'm nervous about sanding off the rust because I don't want to risk magnetically "shorting" any of the laminations with steel particles. I've seen several products that claim they turn rust to some form of black "oxide" and prevent further rust. Has anyone had any success with these, or do people have suggestions for other approaches? TIA.
