I see he was using a 100K input resistor... but if your source's output impedance is anywhere at say 1K (2K?) or below... you could easily graft on the input tranney at the front door and put a 10K volume control on the secondary side of the trans... and I'll bet you'd have a pretty darn nice sounding preamp.
