Early man would have been in a great deal of trouble when it rained, since wood is impossible to light when it's wet. So all the predators would have had to do for supper is wait for a rainy night. Fortunately for early man, his sense of hearing allowed him to detect the approaching predators in the inky black of night, their distance, speed and direction.
