might be interesting to try that experiment you suggested. as I understand it, the red x pen can be used on virtually any objects, even ones not related to the audio system - e.g., a book or an appliance. So could be difficult to separate out the causes and effects, esp. when several items have been treated.
A CD treated with the red x pen that is sitting on a coffee table can affect the sound of a CD being played that is not treated with the red x pen. And a book treated with the red x pen that's sitting on a bookshelf in the next room can also affect the sound of an untreated CD.
A CD, or any object, can be treated minimally with the red x pen or very extensively.
