As you may already know, the drawback of the Hafler hook-up was that any signal that was panned extreme left or right in the mix was reproduced with equal intensity in the rear channel(s) which diluted the stereophonic signal if care was not taken with regards to the volume balance of the rear speakers relative to the fronts.

Since there was no time delay of the rear channel(s), this proved to be quite troublesome to most listeners. This was also true of the front mounted ambience speakers but even more so and it could produce some strange effects, especially with mismatched speakers.
