Speaking of psychoacoustics, many years ago I was playing with the famous Hafler hook-up which basically extracted ambience info from recordings utilizing a L-R scheme.
In the normal set-up, the ambience channel was placed in the rear of the room with results that varied from very good to nothing at and it all depended on the recording. After reading an article about using the same Hafler hook-up but with the ambience speaker(s) placed in the front of the room about a foot behind and to the outer edges of the main left and right speakers, I tried this and the results were much better in this configuration. Yes the "surround sound" that one gets with speakers placed in the rear of the room was gone but in it's place was a greatly expanded and pronounced soundstage on some recordings but just as before, the results were governed by the recording itself.
The biggest drawback to this was that if the ambience channel speakers were different than the main speakers, the spectral differences of the two speakers would distract from the overall effect but if identical speakers were used in all 4 positions, the 3-D effect could be quite pronounced.
Great fun, especially with movies!!
