Lot's of stuff happens in the near field of speakers. I've had good luck sticking weather stripping around the perimeter of speaker boxes when the designers have made no effort to control cabinet edge diffraction.
When I did my Celestion 3's I also tried a strip between the tweeter and woofer but it made the sound worse. I'll try playing around with rope caulk and see what happens, rather than absorbing the surface energy it should force a launch at the point it's installed. I've got a bit of a hole at crossover as a side effect of wiring the drivers to be in phase (but it was well worth it). Maybe I can fill it in somewhat using your scheme.
Interesting that VC leads make that much difference, guess it sort of makes sense. In my youth I accidentally wicked one full of solder, now let me tell you THAT made an audible difference...
