Remember oh, maybe twenty years ago there were some speakers around that had an extra driver in each side that was driven out of phase by the opposite channel? I think maybe Polks or Definitive Tech.

There was some explanation about inner-aural cancellation or some such but I think it had a similar effect to what you are describing and may have generated a similar sound field at the listening spot. I listened to them and could hear the difference but don't recall being very impressed. However it might not have been an optimum geometry.
