Clock has to be running; easy to verify by leaving the battery tray open and flicking the battery n and out.

Without the magnet depending on when you have inserted the magnets the effect will vary, usually with a much smaller almost negligible effect.

Magnets do have an effect depending where you place them relative t your system. I believe I have discussed this before, particularly in relation to steel equipment racks. Placing magnets on the 'rungs' of a steel rack seems to confine any induction generated by transformers. Doesn't work at all on TT racks as the magnets extend the magnetic field and it definitely adversely affects the cartridge.

As for starting of the clock, time of day is not of importance. Rather, with the increasing dependence on the national time clock and the adherence of many time pieces to that clock (available from the internet, BTW). starting of the clock seems to be dependent on the interval of a few second time frame. To be honest, I simply flicked the battery in and out and listened. I suspect that I could display the national time clock and start the clock at an irrational number or seconds after some arbitrary start point, but I haven't tried that.

I was actually sitting in my truck checking out the the clock after purchase and decided to try experimenting with start points of the the clock. after several attempts thee definitely was one point where it did sound noticeably better. Taking it into the home confirmed the observation. As posted previously, the digital clocks are all digital counters, decade counters essentially based on a 32/36 kHz crystal oscillation.

at any rate, my little LCD screen definitely looks to have a sharper more defined image with better color saturation (My main audio system is down at the moment).

Have fun.

Oh yeah I assume magnetic polarity will have some effect so you may want to try flipping the magnets around on the clock. My gaussmeter and compass are likewise in storage so I can't measure anything right now. It is interesting to note that on some clock faces the ultra strong neodymium magnets will actually distort the time patterns of the clock face, turning on or off various LCD segments.
