Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

Why don't my 206e's rock?

I feel cursed. I built some BR 206's as a first project so I'd have something to listen to with a T-amp. Couldn't get the T-amp, so I bought a Clari-T. This combo makes my 6-month-old, expensive speakers sound slow and flat. I plugged them in last night for a comparison and I couldn't stand it. I got the project speakers back in after 5 songs. This Should be Great.

The problem is that while the 206's are light years ahead in midrange tonality and PRaT, the upper mid/lower treble peak causes them to fall apart with rock music. I think taming this would bring the bass forward a bit too, which is somewhat recessed but I can live with that.

I have softened the cabinet around the driver and damped the driver itself, no stuffing yet. I'm curious about damar (dammar?) varnish, although it sounds dangerous and I love the color of the driver as-is.

Is there more to it than just the peakiness? Does the single driver get overpowered by the guitars and there's nothing to be done? I love all types of music, so I'm not prepared to give up the light touch either.

I may end up going with commercially produced hi-eff's too, but that's a whole different discussion. Thanks for any help.
