Hello,You can experiment with wire on your own, but be aware that the PSU quality for the fieldcoil is fairly important. I use a 25 Ah SLA battery. which produced a significant improvement compared to a stock 12V supply. The PSU is subject to dramatic swings in current, produced by the voicecoil. In other words, it's "part of the signal path." With a fieldcoil speaker you sort of have two powersupplies pushing against each other, one driving the fieldcoil and one driving the voicecoil.
One interesting question is: what would be the effect of using a constant-current supply rather than a constant-voltage supply for fieldcoil PSUs. Maybe "Mr. Fieldcoil" Steve Schell would inform us on that?
