Re: Mr. Beam

Hello Mike,

beaming is imho not a big problem with this driver. When you divide in the 1,5 KHZ- range and optimize the response for 10-15 degrees off- axxis beaming shouldn`t be a problem. Beaming results an unbalanced sound when you use a relative stiff 15"- cone for upper midrange or fullrange. On axxis- response is much louder than a few degrees off- axxis, this unbalanced behaviour doesn`t sound good. The driver you use BEGINS to beam at lower frequencies but when you divide at around 1,5 Khz there shouldn`t be any problems. I think there are two other problems with the configuration you want to use. A 15" in a reflex- cabinet needs too much electrical damping, it "sucks" a Liliput- tubeamp when the driver has "common" parameters (Q) for reflex- use and the midrange tends to be too loud (most drivers have a much lower efficiency in the frequency- range below 200 Hz than in the midrange). The driver you named has also a very low Q - this will result a not really deep bass at all. Why not try a backhorn- cabinet (higher efficiency in the bass- range, when the dimension is right also deep (not deepest) basses.
When you look for the high efficiency to combine it with your flyweight- tubeamp a 10" or 12" coax could be the better choice for a reflex- cabinet.

Robert Bastani
