I have a pair of Altec 755Cs and have been using them in a 32" X 36" open baffle, a well known and highly touted design using Baltic birch plywood. I never liked it and finally gave up on trying to like them.
I have a preference for high mass speaker boxes, so the next design was going to be heavy. The panels for the pictured spkr weigh ~ 33#s/each, thus each spkr weighs ~ 100#s. The backside of the panels have mineral tile board glued to them, adding mass and damping. The core of the panels is 3/4" MDF. The center panel is clad with vinyl flooring tiles for damping and looks.
The front of the baffles are trimmed in scrap wood, mostly mahogany, that I had hanging around my shop for far too long and needed to be used. The need to use up the wood was also a big motivational factor in building this project.
I expected them to sound good and I'm pleased at how good they sound.
