RE: 414 out to 8K..

Used 802s are good too. Or find dead ones and send them in to GPA for revival.

I have to withhold judgement on the 414C. Never tried one, so I can't say that it will run without crossover like a 414A/Z.

If you can listen to the C full range on female vocals and it sounds pretty good, proceed with the experiment!

Try that with an Altec 15" and the test won't last long. Runs out of smooth at 1500hz tops.

The whole premise of this minimal sort of crossover speaker really depends on having drivers that can do it. The 414A/B is a very well behaved 12" and I think the 414-8C should be also.

If this scheme doesn't work out for you, try a 3kc or 4kc xover. Keep the vocal range in one driver. The usual Altec 800-1200-1500-1800 range crossover chops up the critical vocal band and there is no reason to do it with a good 414.

I stopped at the cap on the tweeter arrangement. Worked for me. Measured OK too, as far as I can trust my in-place, in-room measurements.
