I did not know Leach. He was there the same time as I was, getting his PhD, but he was in EE and I was Physics, like Patronis, so we didn't really cross paths. I spoke with Leach on the phone several times after he published some construction projects in the mid 70's. He was always very open to that kind of conversation.
Patronis was amazing though. I loaded up on all the classes I could get from him. What a mind. He would say something complex in class and then just chew on his cigar a bit and wait for the light bulbs to come on across the class. They always did. He knew how to present complex material in an understandable way, but he made you dig some as well.
