ESS crossed them very low. 1000Hz and even 800Hz but they are not as sensitive down there.
I cross mine at 2500Hz, 6db per octave and never play my system very loud and I really like the sound of my original "Great" Heil AMT.
Crossed at 2500Hz I have to pad them down 5.2db to match my JBL 2118J that is rated at 97db.
BTW There is almost no inductance so the DC resistance is pretty much the impedance across the board. My Heils measure 3.7 ohms not 4 ohms.
Sebrof would do good to check that as well as the impedance curve of the Altec 416. A great driver IMO but the 5mH choke might not be best do to the self inductance of the speaker coil causing rising impedance.
I've tried and never liked Zobels but a crossover coil value chosen against the actual impedance at crossover would help some and maybe the 416 is 16 ohms at 500Hz? I don't know.
