Thanks Noway. I decided against those JBL's. I may have gotten wrong impression about some characteristics, but the overall character is usually apparent immediately, at least in my experience. I've listened to B&W's, Harbeths, MaCintosh's, and some others under decent conditions and they all left me cold. Took me about 30 seconds to make a decision on Forte's even though they were standing side by side in basement on top of some boxes and it was the first time I ever heard them. I haven't regreted it one bit. Those JBL's did have a fun factor and would be nice feature at a party, but would not be something I'd wanna listen to every day in my living room, especially at low volumes. The way they sounded may have been due to woofer running up to 2K as Weltersys pointed out vs Forte's that only go up to 650Hz or so.
