I think Bill Woods mentioned that a nice way to get "punch" is four 12" woofers in a sealed cab.
Lotsa cone area. Lotsa magnets. No resonator-port issues. Makes sense.
Some of what we call "punch" is also a sense of cabinet pressurization and ringing. I think that's why some mid/bass horns don't have the same "punch" although they are actually capable of greater dynamic peaks and more air coupling. The sense of distortion tells our ears that something is being mechanically stressed.
