I have adjusted my post to refer to movie theaters rather that public address - you are entirely correct about that.
I too have heard a couple Lowther systems that did not fill me with an urgent need to get a Slurpie at a 7-11 far, far away :^) and I agree they can do some real magic in the right circumstances (music, room, amplification, recreational pharmaceuticals ...) But they still won't do rock concert levels with satisfactory slam and remain undistorted - which is, I think, what the original poster really wants.
