All Lowthers use foam surrounds both for the outer cone and then for the spider assembly. If foam drivers in your neck of the woods have a tendency to deteriorate, then so will the Lowthers.
In many ways the Lowther is an amazing speaker. For an old design which has a an excursion of only +/- 1 mm, it plays quite loud and can have supremely quick dynamics. Dynamic range is more than a 'Stat, and the detail is comparable.
This all dependent on the cabs used however. I use the Rethm III's and like them a lot, though mine are currently dead due to foam rot. When they were working, the strengths and weaknesses were very much akin to a Quad ESL 57. The Lowthers had better frequency extension and dynamics and nearly matched the speed of the Quads through out its range (Quads also deteriorate rapidly in my locale).
I've purchased the refoam kits offered on Ebay for the Lowther but have yet to install them.
