A Karlson K15 topped with "The Tube" could do a great job of making mono sound big. Buying a single GPA 416-8C could be very good along with a decent compression driver. "The Tube" can be DIY'ed easy. Some of these folks might even recognize this 50ies design!
Smith horns do mono well too IMO.
