RE: Altec 19 or Valencia or 604 ?

64.12.116.141

I've had 19's for about 18 months and I think they are closer to what I wanted in sonics than lots of other speakers I've had including some big old EV's. It's the dynamics and realism on good recordings that does it for me. Some of those old jazz LP's that I like are incredible and it's like being there.
I think garbage in garbage out applies here because the 19's seem to be very reveiling even though the HF reponse starts dropping off at around 12KHZ. The Valencia/Flamenco's roll off sooner!
A replacement xover cap choice would alter the sonics but knowing what cap worked well in my former Flamencos made the choice for the 19's a no brainer for me. And I'll take the 19's over the Flamencos any day for overall performance.
I did have an early 1950's 604 and I can see why they have a following. I loved the mids and at times I thought it sounded better than the 19 mids but overall the 19's win because they are more dynamic and bigger sounding.
The cabinet the 604 was in wasn't sealed well so I can't comment on the lows with any authority but I think it's sort of common knowledge that the 416B in the 19's provides better bass but maybe not as nice lower midrange as the older 604's. I don't know about Bills new 604's so I'm
not including his in my comments.
Tom Brennan is the Altec sonics expert as far as I'm concerned and if he likes the 19's over many other Altec combos he's had then that means something.
I think the first question would be: do you like horns? I don't think the 19's at their best sound honky or harsh like some horns can but they don't sound like electrostatics or AR's either.
