If the acoustic wave "feels" the mouth (or baffle shape, for direct radiators), a non-circular mouth will create unnatural directivity patterns. If it does not "feel" the mouth, the mouth shape will have no effect.
The above "unnatural directivity patterns" are often summarized by a simplified on-axis anechoic frequency response which can look good. Including the other directions and the room makes it clear that this is not a useful way to look at the situation; you can come to the same conclusion on-axis and anechoic by looking at the time-domain response. Subjectivists come to the same conclusion by listening in real rooms.
