"...the baffle/edge effect is confined to frequencies near the horn and/or mouth cutoff, and with a suitable crossover its effects can often be minimized".

This makes sense to me.

"Non-circular horns produce their own weirdness..."

Again, this makes sense. But I'm speculation / seeking info about round vs. non round horn *mouths*, rather than round vs. non round horns.

What I'm speculating is:

Horn A is round all the way. It's cutoff is 400Hz. Because the baffle/edge effect is extreme, the "suitable crossover" should be at 800Hz.

Horn B's cutoff is also 400Hz. It's round for 90% of it's length. For the last 10% (where, as Paul Joppa says, the passband has mostly detached from the horn walls), it transitions to a oval or rectangular mouth. Because the baffle/edge effect is benign, the "suitable crossover" may be lower than 800Hz.

Alternatively, if you used the same crossover point for A and B, A would have some ripple in it's passband, and B would have almost none.
