The software and digital processing is quite good but they use cheap switching power supplies, crappy digital receivers, and bad analog input and output circuits. If you bypass the analog circuits and replace the other 2 with good quality aftermarket parts, like those from Selectronics you end up with a great sounding unit for not much money.

Google DCX2496 and DEQ2496 mods to see what is available. The DEQ is more powerful as an EQ but the DCX may be all you need and has better documentation for mods although there are several companies that mod the DEQ.
