Many of you know, I've been using the original large Azurahorns for years.
I just put supravox 215-2000-EXC, field coil drivers in them.
On top I'm using the DDS Eng 90-1 horns with Beyma CP385 ND drivers
Using Tuba 30 subs ala Fitzmaurice fame with Emininence Definimax drivers
Still using the BSS FDS 366T digital crossover - going from the hard drive to a Lynx sound card, straight from the BSS DACs to the amps - no pre.
I'm happy - pretty big, though. Wouldn't mind if the setup was smaller
Comments - strengths and weaknesses -
Mids
Dispersion of the Azurahorns is exceptional- DDS90 was only round horn I could find with similar dispersion characteristics. The strength of this dispersion may also be a weakness to some - it kinda takes the edge or bite off - which to me is a preference, but may not to others - obviously those who prefer tractix like the narrower dispersion and longer throw. Think about it, you're spreading the focal point over a wider area with the short throw Azura's - something that sounds more natural to me - longer throw horns such as the tractix I've heard - do have more detail, but more bite and "head in a vise" sweet spot - the sweet spot of the Azuras and Eng 90-1's is really wide and only very gradually goes away when you move to the sides.
Highs - the Beyma's really do sound good - I am sold on neodymium when possible - still playing with crossover points, but one of the tweeter amps is down at the moment due to blown power transformer. The Bottleheads thought they wouldn't like the DDS horns, but immediately thought they added to the system. gonna be crossing somewhere around 6 K - I do plan to add some sort of supertweeter for more "air" at aome point.
Bass - the folded horn lacks a little in tone - but makes up for it in punch - you can really feel kickdrums and kettledrums in your chest. Definitely not anemic. I assed around for years not bothering to bridge the crowns, should have gotten around to it. The greater damping factor of the 410 watts on a single driver helped more than I thought it would.
Very well balanced sound - very natural sound. I'm happy - Likely to do little more changing of equipment, tired of changing - wanna do mostly listening.
Guys - I've heard a lot of systems, although I haven't been to the big shows - I count Oswald's mill as the biggest event in my year though _grin_ Jonathon says I need to get out more _bigger grin_ I have never heard anything do so much nor did I imagine anything would do so much as the field coil units did for my Azurahorns - now if I just had the bucks and space for a cogent setup.
Even so - the field coil drivers make 2+2 add up to 5 or even more.
I want to offer thanks to Duke for his guidance on the DDS horns and Beyma drivers - Thanks to all you guys here at high efficiency who answered my numerous questions - GM comes specifically to mind, I know there are plenty of others
They sound a lot better than most people would think. Of course, a major part of the system is the Dowdy Lama's amps. Another help was going from the hard drive digitally to the DACs in the crossover - straight to the amps - by doing so eliminating a preamp in the chain and any external crossovers - with the BSS dialing in the crossovers is relatively easy
