Karlson was trying to dump energy on the last part of the wedge as its matching to room impedance. Sidewall reflections (and emmissions from the upper half of aperture) are adding to "reverb" which he deemed important in making the sound "live" - I don't have a hard copy of K's 1st installment of "Acoustic Transducers"

there must be a few K-heads in the entire internet world (?)
