Hi,you can use two different size full ranges (say, 8" and 12") and they might work together without a crossover (a la Thornsten's Magnificat using Goodmans Axiom 80 and Axiom 201 with whizzer removed). The smaller one will sound light and the other dark (rolled off in the highs), so they compliment each other.
If you use dedicated tweeter, you have to cross it over with at least a capacitor, or you will blow the tweeter.
