Anyone tried the Peter Boffin Sound Improvement Disc (SID) yet? This product is touted to be able to tame the still shouty digital character of SACD, leading to a much more natural presentation. It has work for me, on my SCD-1 and it helps make digital more acceptable ..., closer to the sense of involvement that I get with my analog set-up. Although I have been using the CD Stoplight (Green Pen) already, this green disc has taken digital playback to another new higher level of enjoyment.
There's 2 models:
Model 14 - for Philips-type sliding CD drawers
Model 15 - for top-loading CD playersPeter Boffin, a British engineer living in Germany, is the one who had come up with this precision-made, extremely flat and thin CD overlay disc that works. He explains what SID does: 'If you hold a CD against the light you will discover that the print of the label is visible from the side to be read (by the laser). The label reflects the light of the laser with varied intensity. Therefore, one gets differing reflections during the rotation of the CD whilst the information is being read. The SID removes reflections caused by the label.'
As the error correction system has to work less, he goes on, 'the music will sound smoother. The vocals will appear as though a veil has been lifted from in front of them. Instruments sound more breezy, concise, and the sound in general less nervous.'
The SID is placed on the label side of the CD. There are two versions. Model 14, with a 14mm centre hole, suits drawer loading Philips-based transports. Model 15, with a 15mm centre hole, suits Pioneer 'turntable' transports, Meridian 505 and 508, and most top-loaders, for example CDC, Theta, Spectral, Jadis JP1, Einstein, Berendsen CD1, Cambridge D300 and D500. The SID is not suitable for use in CD magazine players, portables, or car players.
After hearing how it improves the sound of the SCD-XE670 in the local dealer, I couldn't wait to for the model 15 to arrive and took the model 14 disc home and try it on my SCD-1. It fits the SCD-1 spindle hole perfectly, leaving no gap for offending light to stray through. It has helped tremendously and I have not feel the urge to stop the SCD-1 and put on my stack of newly bought vinyl LPs.
For Singapore Dollars $51.00, this is one tweak that is value for money, and most importantly it works.
