Scoop: first portable SACD player with VSE mods!

These are the first lab pictures of a portable SACD player due out in Q4 this year, just before the big Christmas shopping season. It's modelled on an existing design for a portable DVD player and if you look at the picture closely you can still see the old DVD label on the chassis.

The design goals were to build a portable player with specifications very close to the now discontinued XB940QS. The interesting thing about this new player is the built-in 1 Gigabyte IBM micro drive. A special 'lossless' compression technology allows the user to store up to 5 SACD's. As further 'revs' of the product are developed it is expected that this number will increase to the stated design goal of 15. A specially adapted digital output signal transfers direct from SACD to micro drive. At this time the micro drive is 'hard wired' onto one of the boards, but when the product is eventually releases a PCMCIA slot type application will probably allow users to remove the drive and use it with their laptops for example, or even carry multiple drives with HiRez music.

In addition to this good news a special and secret collaboration between Sony and VSE has come to light. The achitecture of the product has allowed Allen Wright to sneakily tap into the bitstream before it reaches the micro drive. The re-clocked and cleaned up signal promises further sonic improvements. Allen is said to be working on further improving the analog output signal, but details are hard to come by at this moment in time.

The first tests of the modified player (still in 'alpha' status) were done successfully in a closed facility near Paderborn (Germany) in front of a number of select guests. We don't know exactly who was there, but anecdotal evidence coming out of this meeting suggests that the new player was compared to one of Sony's previous flagship models the 777ES - setting the bar very high for a portable player indeed !

..... this is what happens when your gear is in storage because of a move! The need for a portable SACD player is bigger than ever. Perhaps this post can nudge the process along ...one can only live in hope.

Cheers,
Jw - just kidding of course :-)
