New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

An answer from Dan Wright

Howdy

I've felt uncomfortable with claims that the C333ES (or the C222ES for that matter) are "better" than the C555ES.

My aural memory of hearing the C333ES and C555ES in different systems lead me to prefer the C555ES. Also my experience consistently been that you get your money's worth with Sony's SACD players. (By this I mean that the more you pay, the better sound quality you get.)

But nether of these are reliable ways to compare anything so I kept my opinions to my self.

This post prompted me to send a quick note to Dan Wright (ModWright) since I know that he has experience with both C555ES's and C333ES's and I trust his ears.

Here is his response (with his permission but a personal note deleted)

From Dan W. (with his permission but a personal note deleted):

Hi Ted, I would say that the stock 555ES DOES sound
better than the stock 333ES, when both are properly
broken in. I believe that the DAC chips used in the
555ES are superior sonically.

The power supplies are both very good and I don't find
the amount of filtering used in the 555 to be less
than the 333ES at all. They are in fact very similar,
just laid out differently.

The weak link in the 555ES is the very cheap op-amps
that are used throughout the unit. The are a $0.50
op-amp and there are (12) such units used, (2) per
channel. These can be relatively easily replaced with
Burr Brown OPA-2134 op-amps (NOT LT1364's - not happy
with these) and the price of the 2134's is about
$2.65ea. from Digikey (www.digikey.com). If a person
is comfortable doing the "surgery", it is a very
worthwhile upgrade.

Have said this however, I do feel that the stock 555ES
IS better than the stock 333ES. I can't comment on
the two modified side by side as I haven't done enough
555's - (2) total, including yours - and the mods are
not similar enough to compare.

Take care,

Dan W.
