Listen up, folks. he's done it again.
I heard bobwire's modified DVP9000ES player last night and just had to pass this on: it's dynamite! All the work he did on his maggies really paid off big, but I had heard them with his previous players, too, and before this one was "bobwired." This is a BIG step forward.
The short list I heard was Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall, Jazz for a Rainy Afternoon, and Excerpts from The Nutcracker (Telarc). This gave me a handle on how the unit does with (1)congested, distorted and electrified 70's sound; (2)a variety of small instrumental groups not done at the same time or place; and (3)symphony orchestra with loud, soft, large-scale and small-scale works.
The short list of findings: major de-congestion where nothing else worked; levels of spatial detail that scream out for rear channels to really do it proud; and restoration of very-low bass that, up until now, we didn't know was missing. This includes all those aspects of almost sub-audible concert-hall sound that tell you that you are "in the room."
The seamlessness that one hopes for just keeps improving. Some previous tweaks worked so well that I said I could "hear the next level coming." Well, I was right that there would be a "next level," but it was better than I expected.
I'm always allowing for the room, the furniture, the level we can get away with (neighbors), etc. so it's nice to know that one can still improve this much while still operating within those unchangeable constraints. The end is still not here, thank goodness!
Go, Bob!
