I began by thinking that any SACD must be better, but then the reviews came out and the cat was let out of the bag with the Norah Jones CD to SACD transfer. Ouch.

It was clear that moving older recordings to SACD did not necessarily mean better, because if the master tapes were not properly kept or just not very good there may not be much to be gained other than another "mastering" opinion.

Now, if we choose, any of us can hear up to 24/192 or DSD in downloads very inexpensively, but if they were recorded poorly it makes no sense to buy it. I have a number of early SACDs I've bought that are just OK, and a recent one that I am very disappointed it and it was $30. I don't make those mistakes anymore and now pay attention to what the reissue work is take from with the master. If I don't know then I'll wait for a review from someone who is a bigger fan of that artist than I am.

I also know that my systems hold back my hearing of some improvements so I am now doing much more headphone listening on my AKG K701s. Many of you have great systems and these smaller improvements you can easily hear. My 68 year old ears don't help, either.
