The optical pickup is obtainable. I see them on ebay occasionally. I would just recommend that you farm out the replacement to someone that knows what they are doing. It's not a "swap in swap out" procedure. I am fairly comfortable fixing things like blown caps on power supplies but I tried to replace one of these things on an old trashed DVD recorder (I didn't care because it was essentially worthless) and it was very difficult to figure out without a manual.
Maybe if you can get your hands on a Sony repair manual you can tackle it, but without it I would leave it to t a pro. That's a beautiful piece of equipment you have there, don't skimp.
