You can get the laser (called an Optical pickup unit if you want to Google) over here in the UK; at least as a "recycled" unit (see URL). There may well be NOS ones available too.

If you do try to fit one ensure that you use an anti-static workmat and earth (ground) yourself with a wristband connected to an earthing point(wristband usually supplied with the workmat). Static will kill the laser diode until it is installed and effectively earthed via the player. New optical units are protected until you remove a solder "tag" upon final installation.
