well, yes. this is 'jazz that is smooth', just before "smooth jazz" made its regretful debut. there are still artists that put out 'jazz that is smooth' and it shouldn't be mixed into the same bag.
sure, some of the same excellent musicians that first made 'jazz that is smooth' went on to make 'smooth jazz" and they won't die poor. too bad that some of them like bob james, and david sanborn don't still make real jazz.
beyond this, its all taste. we know chris botti has jazz in him but he makes too much dough for the sweet, juicy stuff.
kkurt elling does a take on winelight that is delightful, and that isn'y smoov jazz. it's the real thing.
