Beware that most players truncate the PCM output to 16 bits. I picked up a player (Integra DPS 6.9) on close-out a couple that sounded better than most and dragged it over to John Gatski's (of Everything Audio Network) place since he had an ATI sample rate converter/A/D unit that read bit depth (before he lobbied Benchmark to include it in their current DAC) and it was 16/176.4.

He has tested many (but not all) players and from what I understand except for the Oppos, he has not found any that pass 24 bits. Some also require a handshake (I needed one when I used a de-embedder in my system for a Sony Blu-Ray player with also did 16/176.4 like the Integra, but the Integra did not need a handshake).
