The cable can handle the hi-rez signal but the hi-rez digital signal only comes out of HDMI. The Sony probably needs a handshake to get the output (I use to use embedders before I went to hi-rez computer audio and also have a slightly newer Sony among other players). The Sony is also truncating the word length on output (you may want to search old articles on Everything Audio where John Gatski tested those players and I even dragged an Integra out there once) to 16 bit. So you are not getting full 24 bit 192kHz.
