Ever have a hybrid SACD whose CD layer sounds better?

I've been puzzling over this one. The disc is Gergiev's Mariinsky Orchestra playing Shostakovich Symphonies #1 and 15. I heard it recently at a friend's where the crescendos (this thing is NOT lacking in dynamics) sounded congested and altogether unpleasant (SACD player was by Marantz). Back home, my own copy sounded some better on my Oppo BDP-83SE. Not as congested but hard and closed-in on peaks, certainly not clean and open.

For the heck of it, I put it in my Raysonic 128 CD player. Voila. All was well. Sounded great. What's going on?

The Oppo is otherwise a pretty good-sounding SACD player, BTW.
