Do balanced connects with Oppo 105 REALLY make a difference?!?

My BDP-105 is connected via RCA analog outs (< 3' run) to NAD M3 integrated amp; sounds superb w/shiny media, streaming hi-rez, lossless flacs, etc.

But I keep reading forums where virtually everyone uses balanced cable from their Oppos to amps. I can understand using balanced if there's a very long run between source & amp input, but other than a 6db+ increase in gain, is there any *qualitative* advantage? Would love to hear from anyone who's done some extensive listening to each method. I've spoken with Oppo about this and they tell me for such a short run as my setup, balanced cable isn't necessary or even desirable.

First post here; how the heck have I missed this site in the past!?! :)

Cheers & Happy New Year!
