Actually speaker and room interaction is a huge factor, I remember when moving to the new house how bad my old speakers sounded, and I tried for a long time to get them right, but did not make it. So this is a form of distortion which can be difficult to resolve. I tried many speakers
in my room and many of them just did not work.
As you say distortion is everywhere and one has to work at it until it sounds right.
I am exposed to lot's of high end equipment and do installation at customers houses and one thing for sure throwing money at it does not resove problems.
