Replacement for my Upgraded SCD777ES (a bit of a ramble!)

the 777 ES got too tempermantal for me and I decided to find a replacement.

I now have two!

First a Twisted Pear Buffalo dac powered by 7 'super regulators' fed by dsd signal lines from a Pioneer DV-757 playing sacds. Very nice sound and better than I2S pcm at 176.4k or 192k from a well developed PC playing native or upsampled material in terns of overall 'musicality ie balance between hf and lf'. This has still to be boxed.

Second, I have a Pioneer DV 989 with an Audiopraise pcm/dsd card. This removes the retricted 96k digital output and converts dsd to 176.4k pcm.
The card sounds good and much better than the Pioneer output with the OPA 2134 replaced by LM 4562s and the output caps replaced by BGNs. However, I'd heard that the LME49720 metal cans sound better and recently I fitted these. What a surprise, the unit with analog Pioneer output now rivals the Audiopraise 176.4k output fed into my UA2192 dac. In fact I am now listening to Dvorak 9 on the Pentatone DSD recording and it is as good as anything I have heard; again by way of balance in presentation and not ultra clarity or bass impact or whatever hifi term that are often used.

I now have two DV989s (the second one 65% cheaper new!) which are very well made and I plan to have dsd output only with the second unit which would work with a boxed Buffalo and my dCS954 dsd only. The first and original unit will provide the ability to ouput hirez pcm from dvdas and pcm converted dsd.

This way I should have a very flexible hirez system that also sounds very good.

PC audio is simply not the press and play solution I want, although I shall still play with my systems and use these for more casual playing while I work.
