I listened to an upgraded Sony SCD-1 on Saturday ...

... and I have to say that it was a humbling experience.

This machine had been recently modified by Allen with the full monty (including the Terra Firma clock) and was waiting for the customer (a Swiss violinist) to collect. I was lucky that he had delayed a week to pick the machine up, for I was able to listen to it.

I have heard many systems in my life, but nothing quite like this.

The modified player was feeding the Vacuum State RTP3D preamp and DPA-300 monoblocks using Allen's wires into modified Acoustats, so there was no room to hide. The tonality and precision of the sound reproduction was on a totally different level for me.

So while I understand the reservations regarding "sales talk", some also walk the walk.
