<< I believe that the D>A converters in the Pioneer [receiver] are superior to the ones in the DV-79i. >>
It's possible that this is true, but somewhat unlikely. I have the service manual for the DVD player, and it uses the Burr-Brown PCM1738 DAC chips. This was their best performing chip for many years, and is what we designed into our CX-7e CD player. It has balanced outputs, which in the DVD player are sent to a diff-amp to reduce any common-mode noise or interference during the conversion to single-ended.
I don't have a manual for that particular receiver, but only its predecessor, the VSX-49, which uses AKM DAC chips.
<< I also like to eliminate the extra analogue connections between the player and processor. >>
That is definitely a benefit. It is much easier and less expensive to run a single iLink cable rather than six high-quality analog cables.
The main thing is that you are happy with the sound you are getting. When you are in that position, you should count your blessings and enjoy the music.
