"The question I have is whether it sounds better than simply using an analog connection. There are only two reasons that it could:

a) The digital-to-audio circuitry in the receiver is better than the comparable circuitry in the DVD player. I doubt this is the case.

b) If you are using special digital features in the receiver (such as room correction), then any analog signal would have be re-digitized, processed, and then reconverted to analog.

But if you do your time delays and bass management in the DVD player setup menus, with no further digital processing in the receiver, I would expect the iLink and the analog connections to sound very similar."

I believe that the D>A converters in the Pioneer are superior to the ones in the DV-79i. In it's day the Pioneer was one of the few receivers, the Denon is the other one AFAIK that utilizes the extra converters for use in a balanced mode to reduce noise. I notice a subtle but still significant difference between "pure direct mode" and "stereo mode" in which this process is activated.

I also like to eliminate the extra analogue connections between the player and processor.

I used room correction for a while but found I preferred the un-equalized sound. Perhaps partly due to the use of the RABOS system in my Infinities along with the bass eq used for the other subs to tame low end room effects.

Too bad iLink is done for and I think I will be holding on to and enjoying these legacy components for a long time.
