Also interesting was Charles' info about the actual yearly fees for iLink and HDMI. I had heard that when Apple first devised the FireWire standard, they offered it to other (computer) manufacturers for (as well as I remember) $1 per unit. When the other manufacturers balked at this fee (too high!), Apple reduced it to something like 25 cents (or maybe it was 5 cents - I can't remember) per unit. Perhaps Sony's iLink fees were designed to keep out small specialist manufacturers in favor of the bigger conglomerates like themselves? (But why? I wouldn't think Sony competes directly against specialist manufacturers. Maybe they're just trying to get what the market will bear.)
BTW, I also have a Pioneer Elite player and receiver connected via iLink and am very happy with it, compared with the analogue connections I used previously.
