Howdy
It's not a feature of the DAC6. It is a feature of most other MC players, but they implement it in PCM which sounds bad to me on every device I've heard.
I'm one of the ones with a modded Switchman. They also come up on AudioGon at times.
It's a simple mod conceptually, if a preamp has an input buffer and a separate gain stage (or two gain stages, or whatever) for each channel, a resistor from the center channel to each of the left and the right channels which is 1/2 the impedance of the direct left and right connections works fine.
In the switchman this amounts to two resistors / MC input modified and it doesn't degrade the output at all to my ears and has benefits I described below: http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/hirez/messages/23/237724.html Also there was more discussion in other threads (searching for "phantom center" will net some arguments :)
