i-Link is based on the IEEE 1394 ("Firewire") specification. But it is a very specific implementation. dCS has a method to transfer SACD data from their transport to their DAC using a different implementation of IEEE 1394. The two are not compatible. In other words, you could not connect the Esoteric player to the dCS DAC and have it work.
