'Repetitive' and 'Insipid' sound pretty snobbish to me. Applying the terms to someone else's opinion reflects on that person. Many of us on these boards have 4-plus decades of accumulated musical knowledge.FWIW, given a choice of cellist, Starker is my go-to guy, the Bach suites especially. But the question was not about cellists in general; it was about Yo Yo Ma on SACD. That's what I responded to. The poster did not ask for opinions of the classical repertoire, and I did not offer any. I answered the question.
Morricone may not be Bach, but he ain't chopped liver either. His score for "The Mission" is widely considered one of the best compositions in its field in the past quarter-century, for good reason - it evokes deep emotional responses, both in the context of the film's images and as a piece of music on its own. Taste is subjective, and you may not care for this particular composition. But I think there is enough positive opinion, from critics, other musicians, and from intelligent and informed listeners, to make the case that Morricone (and Yo Yo Ma) should be judged as a serious musician and not just dismissed as another disposable pop crossover.
