Both outrageously priced $5,000 and $3,500. I kept waiting for a real world reasonably priced SACD player, but when the DVP-S9000ES came out for $1,500 I could wait no longer and broke my rule of not paying more than $1,000 for a single component, I prefer to pay closer to $500 if possible. But by then I already had about 30 or so SACDs I wanted to listen to so I sold a bunch of LPs to purchase the too high priced DVP-S9000ES at full retail no yet. Paying full retail really hurt for me as don't pay retail, I look for at the bare minimum a 10% discount with hopes of at least 25%. But like I said I couldn't wait any longer for an SACD player. My interest is more in the music side of the hobby, not the equipment side and I am sure you know this, so you have no reason to be shocked.
I do know of $5,000 phono cartridges which I think is personally insane! In audio magazines (even on-line) I read the software, recording reviews, interviews, news, etc. But I pass over the equipment reviews totally unless I am looking for a specific product in which case I use google so I can read all the reviews. This also means I am only reading about products in my price range.
I am so pleased with my system that currently I am not reading any equipment reviews, that is unless something breaks and is not repairable at a decent price.
Magazine covers do not put the price of the equipment on the cover, you actually need to read the review.
But I remain totally and completely shocked, so shocked it may take decades to get over it!
BTH the new Linn LP12 is just over $4,000 which is much more than it's price in 1984 when it was $899. If that doesn't sound like price gouging I don't know what is? Based on rent, food costs and wages we have had about 90 - 100% inflation between 1984-2008 which means that in 2008 dollars that 1984 Linn LP12 is around $1800, so why is the new one $4000?
I( guess I am calling foul on the whole high-end industry. No one single component. including turntables can justify a price over $5,000 even using the finest state-of-the-art parts and the best engineers. I would even say components over $1,000 have a lot of "fat" in them. But as PT Barnum said "There is a sucker born every minute."
My statement thus is not ridiculous as I have never seen a single component in print or on-line over $5,000 and I don't care to. I would rather assume they do not exist and the music listening is actually a sane hobby.
